The
olive tree and the oil have been present in symbology and myths since
prehistory. The olive tree is a universal symbol of positive values:
peace, triumph and honour. The
oil is used as a purification symbol in religious practices, rituals and
myths. The anointing with the oil of prophets and kings symbolizes the
divine light, as it happens in the Islamic religion, which sees in the
olive tree the symbol of the Paradise of the elected.The
sacred use of the oil expresses the essence of divinity itself. The
choice of the oil as a nourishing symbol is determined by its high
nutritional power, sign of well-being and food prosperity, as well as
being extremely important in the diet for its energy intake. From here
come numerous and varied testimonies of anointing practices of objects,
artefacts, edifices and people, with sacred oils. |
